ABUJA CHILDREN THEATRE FESTIVAL II: YOUNG AUDIENCE PLAY WRITING COMPETITION
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Arojah Royal Theatre, as part of the ABUJA CHILDREN FESTIVAL
II, is seeking submissions for its inaugural Young Audience Playwriting Competition as we search for new voices in young audience playwriting.
There are three categories of prizes available in this inaugural edition for various age brackets of young audiences:
1. Senator Shehu Sani Prize (for plays suitable for young adults aged 18 – 23)
2. Dr. Onukaba Adinoyi Ojo Prize (for plays suitable for children aged 13 – 18)
3. Mrs. Mosunsola Nkanga Prize (for plays suitable for children aged 6 – 12)
COMPETITION OVERVIEW
The winning play(s) will be chosen on the degree of creativity and the novelty of the idea/theme. Adventurous, Educative and Culturally innovative ideas are strongly recommended.
• The depth of the text, characters, places, scene etc.
• The beauty of the writing style and dialogues.
• The ending of the play and how powerful it is.
• The stageability of the plays
• The social relevance of the plays
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION
There is no entry fee. Please follow these guidelines in submitting your manuscript/
entries:
1. Submissions must be original, unpublished full-length plays written in English. Your submissions can be based on an original idea or adapted from a fairy tale, legend, myth or cultural tale. They may also include music and lyrics as long as you own the legal rights.
2. Submissions must adhere strictly to the guidelines and the category being entered for
3. Playwrights may submit only one manuscript in each category.
4. Plays must have a run time of a minim of 25 minutes and maximum of 60 minutes. Darker themes or serious issues could be explored but in very appropriate ways
5. Plays must be family-friendly in subject matter and language
6. Plays that have been professionally produced or published are not eligible.
7. Plays that have had a workshop, reading, or non-professional production or that have been published as an actor’s edition will NOT be considered.
8. Plays may NOT be under option, commissioned, or scheduled for professional production or publication at the time of submission.
9. Plays must be typed/word-processed, page-numbered, and in standard professional play format.
10. All submissions must be received no later than October 15, 2016. The submission window closes at midnight. Send your submissions to AROJAHTIATA@GMAIL.COM
11. If you are submitting your play electronically, please omit your name and contact information from your manuscript. The manuscript must begin with a title page that shows the play’s title, a 2-3 sentence keynote description of the play, a list of characters, and a list of acts and scenes. Please enter the title of your play, your name and contact information (including address, phone number, and email address), and a brief biography in the body of the mail or your cover letter.
12. Please do indicate the category your manuscript is to be considered for in the subject of the mail and in your cover letter e.g. DR. ONUKABA ADINOYI OJO PRIZE (for Young Adults).
PRIZE/BENEFIT
Prizes will be awarded in each of the three categories as follows:
• The winning play(s), one from each category will receive a cash prize (plus certificate) of a N100,000.00
• The winning plays qualify for production as the featured play during the Abuja Children Theatre Festival in November 2016 OR during our 2017/2018 theatre season.
• Two other plays (from each category) will receive a consolation prize of N50,000.00 each.
• Five (5) playwrights from each category will be selected to participate in a playwriting workshop during the festival (Nov. 23-25)
• A selection of the best five plays from each category will be published into Nigeria’s first ever anthology of plays for Young Audiences ahead of the ABUJA CHILDREN THEATRE FESTIVAL III in November 2017.
EVALUATION
The Artistic Director of Arojah Royal Theatre and assigned judges will have sole discretion over the manner in which the winners are determined. All decisions and awards are final. Judges reserve the right to withhold prizes in any category under extraordinary circumstances.
WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT
• A shortlist of five (5) best plays in each category will be announced by NOVEMBER 1, 2016
• Eventual Winner(s) will be announced during the Abuja Children Theatre Festival in Abuja on NOVEMBER 22, 2016
